Colorado Avalanche Acquire Devon Toews

Before you ask: no, not that Toews.

Colorado made a decent splash in the third day of free agency, acquiring defenseman Devin Toews from the New York Islanders in exchange for a second-round pick in each of the next two drafts.

New York bolsters their future assets by acquiring two strong picks while dumping $700k in salary as they look to get rid of some money. Although it may not seem like a big deal, it has been known New York has been looking to sell this offseason. However, I felt like Toews was one of New York’s stronger contributors last year, so in that sense, this move confuses me a little.

For Colorado, they receive a solid depth piece on defense to help them push their way to a Stanley Cup. Toews finished this season with an impressive 28 points on 22 assists. Colorado has quite the arsenal of puck-moving defenseman, complementing Calder-Trophy winner Cale Makar. Also like Cale Makar, it is likely Toews will see some time with the second PP unit, as he spent plenty of time there while in Long Island. I think this is a solid deal more for Colorado than New York (at the moment), but given the Islanders’ draft strength, I wouldn’t count either side out of this deal quite yet.
