This NHL offseason has been an eventful one, to say the least. Free agency began last week and most of the big names have either found new homes like Dougie Hamilton in New Jersey or stayed with their team like Tyson Barrie in Edmonton. A week later and there are still a few guys that are left unsigned. One of those guys being Tomas Tatar.
Tomas Tatar is still available.
Surprising, considering his stats.
Wonder what's going on there?

How Tomas Tatar is still looking for a new home is beyond me. Tatar has six seasons where he scored at least 20 goals. He has been in the league for the last 10 years and has played on three different teams. Tatar found success in Detroit early in his career before he was traded to Vegas. His stay in Vegas was short as the Golden Knights shipped Tatar along with Nick Suzuki to the Montreal Canadiens for Max Pacioretty. Tatar turns 31 in the middle of the season. He has plenty of good hockey left in him and he has proven that he can produce offense. He is criminally undervalued and whichever team signs him will be getting a hell of a deal.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto sticks out as a team that could use Tatar for a few reasons. The biggest one is that he can be had for pretty cheap. The Leafs are in a bit of a cap crunch right now and Tatar could probably be had for about half of what he should sign for. Tatar would be a great addition to the Leafs’ middle-six forward group and would thrive playing next to some of the stars that are currently on that team. The only knock on Tatar is that he seems to disappear when the playoffs roll around. Which when you think about it, that’s exactly what the Leafs do so Tatar would fit right in.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils are an interesting team in this scenario. They are in the midst of their rebuild and have made some strides after the signing of Dougie Hamilton. The Devils have plenty of cap space and a handful of roster spots to fill. Tatar, alongside Jack Hughes, would be a fun sight to see. I know the Devils are trying to get Vladimir Tarasenko from St. Louis. If that falls through, bringing Tatar on wouldn’t be a terrible gamble. Hell, even if they get Tarasenko they still have plenty of cap space to bring him on too. A big what-if scenario but it could be the next step for the Devils’ journey back into the playoffs.
One of the best teams in the league could get one of the most underrated free agents. The Avs have an interest in Tatar, as they should. They have just over $2 million in cap space right now. After Brandon Saad departed for St. Louis, there is an opening in that middle-six forward group. What a deal for Tatar could look like still remains to be seen. The Avs can add a proven 20 goal scorer to an offense that already sits at the top of the league. That is a recipe for success.
There has got to be some reason that Tomas Tatar isn’t signed. I will be shocked if he doesn’t find a new home here soon. He is too good of a player to still be looking for a new team. But as I have said before and I will say it again. Whichever team agrees to a contract with Tatar will be getting one of the most underrated players in the league.
