It is no secret that Max Domi has played his last game in a Montreal Canadiens uniform. Tension and frustration grew between Domi and the Canadiens organization. The pending RFA does not appear to have any intention of signing a new deal.
Domi is set to get a new contract well north of the $3.15 million he made last season. There are a handful of teams that could use the services of Domi. A couple of ones stand out more than others.
The Oilers have a few players themselves that they could package up and send to Montreal for the rights to Domi. Pending RFA Andreas Athanasiou would be the piece that goes to Montreal. It makes a lot of sense for both sides. The Oilers have been rumored to talks with Montreal about Domi and a potential 2 for 1 swap with Athanasiou and Matt Benning.
The Jets are a team that has talked about big changes this offseason regarding both the offense and the defense. Patrick Laine’s name has been thrown around as a candidate to be moved and Nikolaj Ehlers as well would be a nice piece for Montreal to pick up. For Winnipeg, a Domi addition would be a perfect fit. Domi could slot in as the 2nd line center and play that fast pace game that the Jets like to play. And with only eight forwards under contract for next season, the Jets should be looking to add more talent upfront.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets are another team that’s in search of a center that could slot into their top 6. They are a team that also has a player they are looking to move Josh Anderson. A Domi addition would be a huge boost to CBJ’s top 6. It would also bring in another guy that can generate offense. A deal centered around those two could definitely be in the works and would benefit both teams.
