The Blues have locked up the cornerstone of their blueline. Ever since winning the Stanley Cup in 2019, the Blues have been searching for another deep playoff run. Two straight years of a first-round exit have caused some concern from their fans. One player that has stayed consistent in his play has been defenseman Colton Parayko. Even during the most difficult times for the Blues, Parayko has been a shining star.
Colton Parayko plays with a certain style that every team would love to have within their lineup. He is physical, tough, and a huge pain to play against. His play has warranted him an opportunity to get a huge pay raise on his next contract. His current contract expires after the conclusion of this season. With a current cap hit of $5.5 million. Now, he has agreed to an eight-year extension that will carry a $6.5 million cap hit until the 2029-30 season.
🚨🚨🚨Breaking News: The #StlBlues have re-signed Colton Parayko to a 8 year, $6.5M AAV contract extension. 👀

Over his short career so far, Colton Parayko has put up some solid numbers. His best season came back in the 2019-20 season. That year, he put up 10 goals and 18 assists in just 64 games. He matched those same numbers back during the 2018-19 season, but put those numbers up in 80 games. Over the course of his career, Parayko has not been known for his offensive numbers.
Parayko has played in six seasons in the NHL. Over that time, he has put up 41 goals and 130 assists for 171 points in 418 games. Colton Parayko is also a +54 over his entire career. He gets a lot of time on the penalty-kill and can even work the power-play if needed. He has been known to perform in the playoffs as well. In 70 career playoff games, he has put up 8 goals and 19 assists for 27 points. He also helped St. Louis capture its first Stanley Cup in franchise history back in 2019.
Fair Value Deal
This contract might pan out to be a steal in the future. Colton Parayko is one of the best young defensemen in the league. His physical style of play makes him a natural at defending his own zone. At 6’6″, it makes his job easier to box out forwards in front of the net. It is also a great asset that he is a right-shot defender. Teams across the league have trouble finding a superstar, right-shot defender on their roster.
The value on this contract is extremely fair for a player of Parayko’s caliber. Shutdown defenders are crucial for any team looking to make a deep playoff run. The Blues showed that theory was true during their run in 2019 and Colton Parayko was a huge part of that. As it gets deeper into the contract, the clause can go up if Parayko keeps playing at the level he is playing at right now.
