FC Porto Knocks Ronaldo Out of Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo

Tuesday’s Champion League matchups did not disappoint. We saw Haaland score more goals for Dortmund and FC Porto knock Ronaldo out of the Champions League.

We had two great matchups with Juventus vs Porto and Dortmund vs Sevilla. Coming into today, FC Porto held a 2-1 lead on aggregate after a good win at home against Juventus. With Cristiano Ronaldo on the other side, Porto knew it wasn’t going to be an easy finish.

FC Porto struck first with a penalty in the 19th minute. With Sergio Oliveira finishing the penalty, Porto took a 3-1 aggregate lead into halftime. This set up a fantastic second half. Juventus finally struck in the 49th minute, with a finish from Federico Chiesa. Just 5 minutes later, Porto was forced to go down a man after Mehdi Taremi received his second yellow card. This puts even more pressure on Porto, as Juventus controlled possession 68% of the time. In the 63rd minute, Juventus tied the aggregate score with a beautiful finish from Chiesa again.

Juventus were unable to find a winner in regulation though. The first half of extra time started out very slow, just the opposite of the second half. Porto broke through in the 115th minute. This came from an amazing free kick from Oliveira, scoring his second of the game. Just two minutes later, Juventus struck back with a header from Adrien Rabiot. Even though this tied the aggregate at 4-4, Porto was winning the tiebreaker due to away goals. Juventus had multiple chances in the closing seconds but was unable to score.

When Ronaldo signed with Juventus in 2018, their goal was European glory. That has not come. Juventus reached the final in 2015 and 2017 but lost both. Since signing Ronaldo, they have not reached the final. Ronaldo has been knocked out of the Champions League before the quarterfinals each of the past three years. It will be very interesting to see what moves they make going forward.

For Porto, they are hoping this is only the beginning. Porto will learn their next opponent on March 19th, the day of the quarterfinal draw. They have not won the Champions League since 2004, so they will be ready for whoever they play.
