On this day in 2020, David Ayres made history. In a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes, both net-minders for the Canes were forced out of the game due to injury. Which gave Ayres his time to shine.
Ayres is the Toronto Maple Leafs emergency backup goalie. Each team has its own EBUG when they play at home. Very rarely do we see EBUGs in action. But on this night last year, Ayres made his appearance. He played 28 minutes and 41 seconds and stopped 8 of 10 shots he faced on way to a 6-3 Canes win. He became the oldest goalie at 42 years and 194 days old to both make his debut and win.
Many look back on this day and like to say “The Leafs lost to a Zamboni driver.” But little do they know, that zamboni driver played minor league hockey and spent some time playing in the beer leagues.
At the end of the day, David Ayres is a hockey player. And this day is one of those memories that we love as fans of the game. It is also a memory that Ayres will have forever.
