Has Jack Eichel Played His Last Game in Buffalo?

Has Jack Eichel

The Buffalo Sabres will be without their captain for the remainder of the season. It was announced that Jack Eichel will undergo surgery for a herniated disc in his neck. Eichel finishes his 6th season in Buffalo playing 21 games and recording 18 points. He scored 2 goals and added on 16 assists. He is expected to be fully healthy for the 2021-2022 season. But will he still be wearing a Sabers sweater next year? Has Jack Eichel played his last game as a member of the Buffalo Sabres?

How bad the Sabres have been

It is no secret that Eichel is not happy with the way the Buffalo Sabres are run. This team has not even sniffed the playoffs since the 2010-2011 season. That season they got bounced in the 1st rouned by the Philidelphia Flyers in seven games. The team is on its 7th head coach since they last played in the postseason. They have finished last in the division in five of the last eight seasons and they are looking to finish at the bottom of the division again this season.

In 2015, Sabres fans thought things were going to get better when they held the 2nd overall pick and drafted Jack Eichel out of Boston University. Through six seasons in Buffalo, Eichel has played 375 games. In those 375 games, he scored 139 goals and recorded 216 assists. Eichel still has five years remaining on his current contract that pays him $10 million a year through the 2025-2026 season (Cap Friendly). His no-movement clause kicks in for the 2022-2023 season.

Why the Sabres should move on

It is very obvious that Jack Eichel is no longer happy in the city of Buffalo. I mean let’s be honest, who would be happy playing for an organization that refuses to take the necessary steps to become a relevant organization again. They don’t scout well, they don’t draft well, they don’t develop well and they aren’t a good free-agent destination. So it has got to be time for the Sabres to just blow it all up and start from scratch.

Getting out of Buffalo has got to be what Eichel wants. He is an instant upgrade to most team’s top-six forward groups. If the Sabres play their cards right they can get a damn good return for Eichel. This is the time for a deal to get done. Eichel isn’t happy, but there isn’t much more than the organization can do to keep him happy. He wants to win, but he definitely isn’t going to win in Buffalo. He wants a new start with an organization that gives him a chance at winning a cup. There is a lot of time between now and when the 2021-2022 season will begin and there is a pretty good chance that Eichel has played his last game with the Buffalo Sabres.
