Hurricanes Defeat Struggling Maple Leafs 4-1

Maple Leafs

Sebastian Aho

It is a tale as old as time. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been the center of attention for many years now. Their constant amount of screw-ups has led them to be the biggest meme in NHL history. It doesn’t help with the fact that they have two of the most dynamic offensive players in the league who are not producing at the level that they should be. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner had not scored a goal heading into tonight’s game against the Hurricanes. That changed tonight.

With the Maple Leafs on a small losing streak at the moment, they need their core guys to step up. They cannot rely on production from their fourth line every game if they want to win hockey games. Luckily tonight, Auston Matthews finally got his first goal of the season. Even with that boost of energy on their side, that was all that Toronto was able to put up on the board. Carolina takes this game by a score of 4-1.

Different Game, Same Result

Do you remember the last time the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs met in a game? That is the legendary game of David Ayers, the Zamboni driver that came in as an emergency backup and got a win against the team he worked for. That was one of the best moments in NHL history. In that game, Toronto had trouble scoring goals against a Zamboni driver. Tonight is no different except this win seems a little more personal for the goalie.

Frederik Andersen was traded to the Maple Leafs from the Ducks back in 2016. He managed to help the Maple Leafs make it to five straight playoff appearances. Andersen was solid for Toronto, but he could not manage to get out of the first round. His play made him an easy target for Maple Leaf fans to rip apart. It was not all his fault, but he was run out of Toronto. He now resides in Carolina where he made 24 saves on 25 shots to stun his former team. Andersen now has started the season 5-0-0.

Big Stars Producing For Carolina

In the NHL, you need your top players to produce to get anywhere in this league. The Hurricanes managed to get production from their stars tonight. Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and Nino Niederreiter managed to tally goals tonight for the Canes. Steven Lorentz scored the fourth goal for the Hurricanes. This is the type of offensive production that the Maple Leafs need from guys like Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Mitch Marner. Without production like this, the Maple Leafs will not go anywhere far this season.
