The Carolina Hurricanes have secured their franchise winger for the foreseeable future. Andrei Svechnikov was drafted second overall back in the 2018 NHL Draft behind Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres. Ever since his arrival in the NHL, Svechnikov has gifted the hockey world with some dazzling highlights. After a long summer of negotiations, the Hurricanes and Svechnikov have come to terms on a contract. The RFA has been signed to an eight-year contract worth an average of $7.75 million.
The contract will make Andrei Svechnikov a UFA when the contract expires in 2028-29. This should be a celebration for Carolina as Svechnikov has chosen to stay long-term instead of taking a bridge deal to potentially earn more in 2-3 years. Overall, this seems like a great deal for both sides.
BREAKING: Canes re-sign Andrei Svechnikov to 8-year extension at $7.75M AAV
— NHL News (@PuckReportNHL) August 26, 2021
This contract seems like an absolute steal by the Hurricanes. Andrei Svechnikov could have easily signed a bridge deal to get a pay increase in about three years. This deal locks him in at a max extension and the value could see a significant profit soon. A player with the skillset of Svechnikov could easily get $9.5-10 million a season. The fact that they have him locked in at under $8 million is an absolute bargain.
Andrei Svechnikov is a gifted sniper in the NHL. His big body and insane puck handling skillset make him a natural goal scorer in this league. Obviously there is room to grow with his game considering how young he is, but overall his a very mature player. If he can stay out of the penalty box and continue to produce offense, this might be one of the best contracts in the league.
Andrei Svechnikov has produced quite a lot since his rookie season back in 2018-19. There have been a lot of memorable moments from his short career so far. He is the first player in NHL history to successfully complete the “Michigan” goal in an NHL game. To make it even better, he managed to score two “Michigan” style goals in the same season.
In three seasons, Andrei Svechnikov has put up 59 goals and 81 assists for 140 points in 205 games. He is a +10 over his career and has racked up 160 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he has put up nine goals and eleven assists for twenty points in 26 games. Svechnikov has a lethal shot and a silky set of hands to fool any goaltender. He is one tough kid to the point that he will voluntarily take on a Russian machine in Alex Ovechkin for a fight in a playoff game. That takes courage and shows a lot of heart for your team.
