It Looks Like An NHL Lockout Could Be Looming

The NHLPA feels “blindsided” by the owners asking the players to change the terms of their new CBA. This comes just four months after the players agreed to this new CBA.  However, the owners expect to take major revenue hits next season due to the  COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance is a major hit as next season is likely to return to bubble life or no fans in the stands. The owners have told players they are looking for more cash flow according to an NHL rep.

The bottom line is that the players already agreed to this deal and should not have to budge or even play chicken. Escrow has been ridiculous in the NHL for years, and now the owners are asking for more? Fuck off! The owners’ first proposal is to have deferred compensation climb to 20% this season and escrow clime to 25% with no effect on future seasons. The players obviously said go fuck yourself and good on them.

The second proposal by the greedy owners is not much better. Deferred compensation would rise to 26% next season and increases around 8.5% for the next four to six years, as reported by Greg Wyshynski of ESPN. The CBA currently has escrow capped at 10% for the 2022-2023 season. After that, it would be capped at 6% till the end of the 2025-2026 season.

This is complete bullshit, and the owners didn’t just blindside the players that go out there and grind for them, but they blindside the fans as well. These players are the most underpaid in professional sports, and we fans are absolutely sick to our stomachs about them getting shorted. We may have a lockout next season, but if it comes to that, it’s on these greedy owners and not these players that grind harder than any athletes on the planet to seemingly always catch the short end of the stick.

Finally, when the NHL looked like they figured it out and players were going to get their fair share, the owners are going back on their word. This is about respect, this is about what they deserve, and the players should fight like hell. The owners and players agreed to a fair deal, but the owners will never give the players a fair deal without a fight. It’s time the players fight back to reiterate this is on the owners if we have a lockout.
