The Chiefs are coming off a humiliating loss in Super Bowl LV to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When you lose a game that big as the Chiefs did, you need to assess the team. The Chiefs have done some major reconstructing to the offensive side of the ball. They have restructured some contracts like Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes to make cap space to help upfront. One of their biggest moves was making the tough decision to release long-time tackle, Eric Fisher. They used the money that was freed up there to sign former New England Patriots guard Joe Thuney.

This is a major contract they are giving Thuney. Joe Thuney was the highest-ranked offensive lineman on the market heading into free agency. Thuney is looked at as an ironman of a player as he rarely misses any time. A lot of the success the Patriots had with running the ball was stemmed from Thuney’s play. The Chiefs have the weapons to make some big-time plays, but they need help on the line to protect Mahomes. That was a major concern during the Super Bowl.

Career Stats

Joe Thuney was selected in the third round of the 2016 draft by New England. Not only did he make an immediate impact on the line, Thuney helped the Patriots make three straight Super Bowls. After a rough last few seasons in New England, Thuney has decided it is time to move on. He was also selected to the Second-team All-Pro in 2019, but never to the Pro-Bowl. Every game he has ever played in he has started for the Patriots. With Thuney on the line, Mahomes will have plenty of help on his blind side. He still may need to make some miraculous plays, but not as many if he can stay in the pocket longer.
