Pittsburgh has opened the bank big time. Young defenseman John Marino has signed a six-year extension that will begin for the 2021-22 season with an average of $4.4 million a season. Marino had a breakout year last year by scoring 28 points in 56 games and finished with a team-high in plus-minus (+17).
The Penguins have re-signed defenseman John Marino to a six-year contract extension.
The deal begins in 2021.22 and runs through the 2026.27 season, with an AAV of $4.4 million.
Marino has one year remaining on his entry-level deal.

Rutherford believes that Marino proved he can be a top-four defenseman on the team with his skill set and defensive awareness. Is this jumping the gun a little too early after one great season? Maybe. Rutherford isn’t afraid to make a bold move in this league and this proves it. The Penguins believe they have found their guy on the blueline and time will tell if that plays out to be true.
