Lehner, Golden Knights Hold On For 3-1 Win

Vegas seems to have found a rhythm. Both Vegas and Colorado finished in the top two spots in the league standings last year. They are both heavy favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season. The start to the season for both teams has been less than ideal. Both teams have losing records and have had trouble scoring goals. Their goalies in Robin Lehner and Darcy Kuemper have been solid so far. With all the firepower the Golden Knights and Avalanche have, that is hard to believe.

The Golden Knights have suffered some key injuries to start the season. Two of their best forwards in Mar Stone and Max Pacioretty are out for a good amount of time. That could be a key reason for their struggles on offense to start the season. As for the Avalanche, Nathan MacKinnon missed the first two games due to COVID-19 protocols. Now that he is back, the Avalanche are looking to get a boost on offense. Unfortunately, that seems to have not transferred to tonight. Vegas rides an early 2-0 lead to hold on for a 3-1 win in Colorado on Tuesday night.

Lehner Shuts Down The Avalanche

The biggest story surrounding Vegas this season is with their goalie situation. Their decision to move on from Marc-Andre Fleury in favor of Robin Lehner had Golden Knights fans up in arms. Lehner is more than capable of holding down the fort for Vegas. Tonight, he showed that he can absolutely help Vegas be a serious contender with some huge saves on the Avalanche.

After Chandler Stephenson and William Karlsson scored for Vegas in the first period, Lehner had a lead to work with. That helped him gain some confidence and settle into his game. Despite allowing a goal at the end of the second period, Lehner did not panic. He shut the door on Colorado and managed to stop 26 out of 27 shots for a huge win against a worthy opponent in Colorado.

Offensive Struggles For Colorado

It is hard to believe that the reigning President’s Trophy-winning team is having this much trouble scoring goals. With this loss tonight to the Golden Knights, the Avalanche are now 2-4-0. As a heavy favorite to win the Stanley Cup this year, that record is shocking. It also does not help that the leading point producer on this team in six games only has five points. Second on the team in goal scoring right now is J.T Compher.

This team has way too much talent to only be putting up one goal against a struggling team in Vegas. With all the injuries the Golden Knights have, this is the game the Avalanche should dream of to get back on track. After getting a huge goal at the end of the second period to get some momentum, Colorado managed to only put up nine shots in the third period while down by one goal. That is not enough. If this team wants to turn their season around (which I know they can), they need to start having their top players produce more.
