Dylan Cozens continued his hot streak with 1 goal and 1 assist, and Team Canada goalie Devon Levi shut the door, leading the red and white to a 3-0 Quarterfinal win against the Czechs.
For the first time this tournament, Team Canada gave up more than 20 shots against, and starting goaltender Devon Levi was up for the task. Levi looked solid in his first real test of the tournament, stopping all 29 Czech shots for the shutout.
Canada opened the scoring at the 8:22 mark of the first period when Cozens received a high saucer lob pass from his own end from Connor McMichael and converted his breakaway opportunity, putting a squeaker off the Czech netminder Nick Malik and into the net.
Just 3:17 later, Bowen Byram would fire another soft goal home under the arm of Malik for Canada, who would take the 2-0 lead into the break, despite being outshot 12-8 in the period.
Canada would start the 2nd period off with several chances. Still, it could not capitalize on any as both teams would be held off the scoresheet and head into the 2nd intermission with Canada still leading 2-0.
The third period did not provide much offense either as Connor McMichael would score the lone goal of the period in an empty net at the 2:49 mark, sealing a 3-0 victory for Canada. With Canada only up 2 goals, it was a questionable decision by Czech coach Karel Mlejnek to pull his goaltender with approx. 6 minutes remaining in the game.
Despite the loss, the Czechs outshot Canada by a final total of 29-25 and put up a tough fight against the Canadians. Canada was unsuccessful on their only powerplay opportunity, bringing their tournament total to a dismal 5/16.
Bowen Byram was named Team Canada’s Player of the Game, and Stanislav Svozil was named the Player of the Game for the Czechs.
Canada will enjoy a day off Sunday as they prepare for their Semi Final matchup on Monday night against Russia. Getting out to a fast start will be a big key to their success. Canada is the only team in this year’s tournament that has not been down a goal at any point of the event.
