After Charles Oliveira’s successful title defence over Dustin Poirier at UFC 269, the Irishman took to social media to declare he would be fighting the Brazilian for the lightweight strap upon his return.
“So what date am I fighting Oliveira?,” McGregor wrote followed by a tweet of an Irish flag and vs. a Brazilian flag 2 after.
Islam Makhachev Responds
Unsurprisingly, Islam Makhachev didn’t take well to the comments, considering the Russian has continuously worked up the lightweight rankings. Makhachev made his own claim to when McGregor would be fighting Oliveira.
“Your fight is on February 30,” Makhachev responded to McGregor.
The quick wit surprised some fans from Makhachev, with many believing it was actually Ali Abdelaziz. The response from Makhachev insinuated that McGregor’s title shot would never come, as we will never see February 30.
Like it or not, with the draw the name Conor McGregor has, the Irish superstar could very well be in the short-list for the lightweight title after No.1 contender Justin Gaethje. With the eye ball’s and numbers he pulls in, he’s always just one fight away.
