Bellator 262 was an event filled with memorable moments, and while some fighters might have left in high spirits, others didn’t fare so well. Chief among them was Matt Mitrione. He protested a clash of heads with his opponent Tyrell Fortune which immediately preceded a flurry of ground and pound strikes that caused Mitrione to submit to strikes.
This goes down as the fourth consecutive loss for “Meathead”. An MMA veteran who is 0-4-1NC in his last five fights. The news of the Matt Mitrione cut was first reported by MMA Fighting and has since been relayed by other outlets. In addition to the release of “Meathead”, Ronny Markes and Adil Benjilany were also confirmed to have been let go by the promotion.
What’s Next for Matt Mitrione?
After the loss to Fortune, Mitrione’s MMA record now stands at (13-9-1NC). It’s a bit misleading, as “Meathead” actually holds a great resume of victories.
Defeating Kimbo Slice at UFC 113 will always be a great achievement, as will the victories over Derrick Lewis, Gabriel Gonzaga, and the legend that is Fedor Emelianenko. A lefty that made a career off knocking out his opponents with the right hand, Matt Mitrione is just a different breed.
You could say that after his loss to Ryan Bader at Bellator 207 Mitrione has been a changed man. Or, you could look at things from a more positive perspective. Instead of saying “Meathead” is washed after all these losses, you could say maybe he just needs a fresh start. Instead of being (13-9), on a four-fight losing streak, Mitrione could be (0-0) again. While even possibly making more money in the process.
Could a Move to BKFC Be Just What Mitrione Needs?
Now hold up, you might be thinking: “No, we don’t need another old MMA vet going to Bare Knuckle Boxing!” However, many would also say that it would be pretty exciting. Especially given the fact that Mitrione is a knockout artist, first and foremost. So theoretically, his greatest strengths translate well into the sport. Not only that but we could be given a throwback fight if the fans could convince Joey Beltran and “Meathead” to run it back.
At this point, after a Bellator release, there doesn’t seem to be that many options for Mitrione. Yes, he could choose to retire, but what if he doesn’t want that? Another option could be a move to other top-tier promotions such as ONE FC, or the PFL, but he also has that MMA record following him around.
If we witnessed “Meathead” make the move to BKFC and get that fresh start, we could possibly witness a rebirth. Such as the likes of Jorge Masvidal when he came back from a Reality TV show appearance that gave him the break he needed to breathe new life into his career.
