The Maple Leafs have found their forward before the deadline. With a draft class that is on the weaker side this year, many teams are willing to part with a high draft pick. This includes two teams already before the NHL Trade Deadline. These teams are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders. Kyle Palmieri was already shipped to the Islanders for a first-round pick a few days ago. Today, it is Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno that is on the move.

The Maple Leafs are in a prime position to make some noise in the playoffs. They are one quality veteran away from being a complete team. That changes today with the move they just made. Nick Foligno has made some fantastic memories as the captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets. It now seems that he is starting his next chapter in the hockey world. The pending UFA this summer is being shipped to Toronto for a first-round pick and two fourth-round picks. Stefan Noesen is also a part of the deal. The Leafs are only going to be paying 25% of Nick Foligno’s salary this season.

Season Stats

It has been a dramatic season for the Blue Jackets. With the main focus of head coach John Tortorella, a guy like Nick Foligno gets lost in all the commotion, but he is still a great leader. This season, Foligno has managed to put up seven goals and nine assists. He is currently a -3 on the season, but that is expected on a team like Columbus this season. Nick Foligno is a fantastic leader who will provide some much-needed experience for this young Maple Leafs’ team.

What Type of Player is Toronto Getting?

Nick Foligno is a specialist on many different situations in a game. Foligno is a fantastic penalty killer and can be a net-front presence on the power-play. He may not be the flashiest goal scorer (except one between the legs goal last year), but he can score. He loves to go to the dirty areas of the ice to help get production fr the team.

On this team, Nick Foligno will fit in great with the third line. He doesn’t have the offensive touch to be a top-six on this team, but if it comes down to that, he will be ready. This move is fantastic for some of the young guys on this team. Players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner will value anything Nick Foligno has to say to them. This move is a fantastic one for the Maple Leafs.
