When it comes to discussing the best players the NHL has to offer, you often hear Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Nathan MacKinnon, or Sidney Crosby. Well, this season, the list has changed. There is a new sheriff in town, and his name is Auston Matthews.
In 16 games played, the 23-year-old has scored 14 goals and added 7 helpers. Matthews has been head and shoulders above any of the aforementioned players above. His commitment to the defensive zone this season has stuck out like a sore thumb. The kid is maturing.
In a weak North Division, there is a reason for fans across the NHL to be excited at the prospect of seeing a 50 goal season in this shortened 56 game schedule. More impressive than the goals themselves is the fact that 10 out of the 14 goals scored have been scored at even strength.

“[Matthews] just competes so hard, I think he should be up for — 18 games in or whatever — the Selke, Hart, Rocket. He does so many things. He just plays the game the right way, and I really enjoy watching him play and playing alongside him. He’s a complete package.” – Joe Thornton
It truly is hard to disagree with “Jumbo Joe”, Matthews has been every bit as good in his own zone for the Leafs and is separating himself from the other top players in the game because of his commitment to his own end of the ice. Auston Matthews is the best player the Leafs have had since Sundin and, to be frank…He is even better.
Auston Matthews without a doubt has been the best player in the NHL thus far this season.
