The Blues still have a chance at the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It wasn’t long ago that the St. Louis Blues were able to win the Stanley Cup over the Boston Bruins. In their defending season, all seemed to be positive through the regular season. The Blues finished with the best record in the Western Conference as the NHL paused its season. Ryan O’Reilly and company seemed to be ready to defend their championship as the Bubble started up last summer. Sadly, that was not the case as they were defeated in round one by the Vancouver Canucks.
This season has been a roller coaster of a year for the Blues. They still haven’t seemed to recover from their former captain, Alex Pietrangelo, leaving them for the Vegas Golden Knights. The season started off well for these Blues, but ever since it hasn’t gone as smooth for the entire team. Currently, the Blues trail the Coyotes by one point for the final playoff spot in the Central Division. Ryan O’Reilly is in his first season as the new captain of the St. Louis Blues. Today, he showed his leadership completely to help the Blues get a huge win.
Insane First Period
This game got off to an electric start. An early five-on-three power-play for the Avalanche helped get their offense going. Sophmore-year defenseman Cale Makar rips home a one-timer to give the Avs an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after the second power-play expired, Gabe Landeskog finds a loose puck in front to give the Avs a 2-0 lead. The most upset player on the Blues after that goal was Ryan O’Reilly. He expressed his emotions by taking over the game.
Ryan O’Reilly got the Blues right back in the game by scoring two goals of his own to tie the game. After that, Ivan Barbashev puts home a goal to give the Blues a 3-2 lead before the end of the period. This would be a huge momentum booster as the game continues to unfold. The Avalanche couldn’t recover after an amazing turnaround by the Blues.

Capping Off An Impressive Day
Once the game was tied in the third period, the Blues got a huge opportunity. The Avalanche got into some penalty trouble to give the Blues a five-on-three late in the period. Mike Hoffman rips home a missile to give the Blues a huge 4-3 lead. What better way to seal a victory than for the captain to get a hat-trick? That is exactly what happens. Ryan O’Reilly puts home an empty-net goal for his third career hat-trick. What a day for Ryan O’Reilly and the Blues. They now hold the final playoff spot over the Arizona Coyotes with two games in hand as well.
