Today is a great day for contract extensions in the NHL. After the news broke earlier about Andrei Svechnikov and Carolina, we have some news out of Philadelphia. Sean Couturier is one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL. He can work the power-play as well as kill off the worst penalties. Today, the Flyers made sure they will hold on to Couturier for the foreseeable future. Sean Couturier has agreed to an eight-year extension with Philadelphia.
The former eighth overall pick in 2011 gets a huge pay increase from the last contract he signed back in 2016. He goes from making an average of $4.333 million a season to $7.75 million a season. The new contract for Sean Couturier will kick in after this upcoming season. This seems like a pretty fair value for a player that brings what Sean Couturier brings on a nightly basis.
Sean Couturier also gets the Andrei Svechnikov treatment. #Flyers announce an 8-year, $62 million extension – 8 x $7.75 million for the 2020 Selke Trophy winner.

Sean Couturier is one of the most consistent two-way forwards in the league when he is healthy. Over the course of his career, he has climbed the ropes to become the top center on the Flyers’ roster. In his career, Couturier has managed to put up 174 goals and 269 assists for 443 points in 692 games. He is also a +88 over his entire career, which is quite impressive considering some of the teams he has been on over the years.
His career-high for goals and points came during the 2018-19 seasons. That year, he managed to put up 33 goals and 76 points. Sean Couturier has also performed extremely well in the playoffs. In 39 career playoff games, he has managed to put up 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points.
Couturier also has some hardware to his name. During the 2019-20 season, Sean Couturier captured the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best two-way forward in the NHL. This award was well deserved and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the ballot this upcoming season.
Sean Couturier has made a name for himself around the NHL. He gets top minutes every game and can go up against teh toughest competition. There is a reason he is in the conversation for the Selke Trophy every season. That is because he is very comparable to other stars around the NHL.
Some of the players that best resemble the play style of Sean Couturier are guys like Patrice Bergeron and Anze Kopitar. All three of these players are excellent 200-foot players and are all leaders on their respective teams. The current captain of the Flyers in Claude Giroux has his contract expires this season. If he decides to leave the team, I can completely see Sean Couturier taking over as the captain of the Flyers.
