There is one thing that is certain at the moment. The Washington Capitals have a goalie controversy. Their upcoming superstar Ilya Samsonov hasn’t played a game since being put on the NHL COVID list. Samsonov is one hell of a talent. His skillset makes it easy for the Capitals to move on from a fan favorite in Braden Holtby.
His absence has been noticeable for the Capitals. Going into last night’s game, the Capitals had lost four straight games in regulation. In their previous nine games before that, it never happened once.
The capitals have two AHL starters for goalies they gotta clean up defensively, get a real starter or this season is a throw away

Samsonov has not played a game since January 17. Although rookie goaltender Vitek Vanecek was solid immediately after Samsonov’s absence, the rookie jitters have caught up to him. In his last five games, he has allowed 16 goals. That is an average of over three goals a game. The Capitals obviously believe in this kid over veteran goalie Craig Anderson with all the time he’s getting. It is either that or they do not believe Anderson is an NHL-caliber goalie anymore.
Well, Craig Anderson definitely isn’t the answer.

Capitals fans are getting restless. Head coach Peter Laviolette doesn’t have a timeline for how long Samsonov will be in Hershey. A healthy and focused Samsonov is the answer the Capitals need right now. With teams like Pittsburgh creeping up the standings, these Capitals need to wake up to stay in the hunt.
