The Unofficial Lightweight Tournament Continues Tonight at UFC 257

Well, this is an interesting one.

Nick Peet of Fight Disciples asked Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, and Dan Hooker about his unofficial “Lightweight Tournament”. For those unfamiliar with the situation, please see here:

All four of the fighters in question declared they would be willing to participate in a tournament of this caliber. Dana White also loved the idea of a lightweight tournament. The first round of the tournament begins tonight at UFC 257, pending approval.

The winner of Conor McGregor versus Dustin Poirier would fight Charles Oliveira. Oliveira defeated Tony Ferguson to kick off the tournament at UFC 256. However, on the other side of the tournament’s bracket is Justin Gaethje versus Nate Diaz. That fight has yet to be made official by the UFC. If Nate’s able to pull off the upset, a McGregor vs Diaz third fight may be a more intriguing option for Uncle Dana.

Finally, we have Hooker against Chandler which takes place tonight at UFC 257. Whoever wins that fight would either face Oliveira or the winner of Gaethje/Diaz.

With current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov looking towards retirement, there is no more exciting way to crown a new lightweight king. I can’t say I love the idea of a set bracket, only because a McGregor Diaz scrap will always excite me more. Although, Pete certainly did not miss on getting the most exciting and deserving fighters into the tournament. Fight fans: would you like to see the unofficial tournament become official?
